FLASHBACK 06 - 07

The academic year 2006-2007 spelt trouble for RP right from the beginning. However we managed to come out unscathed every time.

The 2nd year batch showed immense promise and the “interaction” with them was going just fine when out of the blue, a bunch of 3^rd yrs found themselves in a situation where there careers were at stake. Thanks to one 2^nd yr who could not endure the “interaction” because probably he was more “sensitive” than the others. However, everything worked out well for us in the end and we came out even stronger.

The imbroglio with Patel Hall during Water Polo and Nehru Hall some time back, asserted RP as a Hall which in spite of being “Gentlemen, by choice” took no nonsense from others when it came to protecting their dignity. In retrospection, these events were good for RP in the sense that they united the hall in a way that was unprecedented.

This year also proved to be a treat for the gourmet. “Rockies” was a welcome change from the “Monkai” years. There was also a revamp in the image of the mess, what with a mess card system in place, and butter as a substitute for ghee which was ‘supposedly’ used previously. Both of these were ‘firsts’ in KGP. The credit goes to “Chauhan Sahab”.

The “legendary RP choreo” was not legendary this year and we managed to get bronze, finally managing to shed this image.

This year RP asserted itself in the elections as well with two coveted posts coming RP’s way.

The hard work put into “illu” paid and the cup came back to where it belonged. If the judges had “makhaoed” this time too, the residents would not have had the same tempo for “illu” next year. However they delivered and we won.

Finally, the GCs continued to elude RP this year too. The Tech GC however was a close miss. Hopefully next year, the promising 2^nd yrs (coupled with representatives in the Gymkhana ;) ), should help us bring the GCs to RP. Let us make the next year a year that saw RP clinch all the GCs.

I am tired of running

running from myself

lost in a myriad,

trying to survive,

fighting from my own self.

For how long this battle will continue

I dont know.

Wise men say its eternal

But do i have strength

and courage to fight alone

I lost the alchemyAlchemy

to turn my dreams into reality.

But no,not yet,not so soon.

I cant fall,cant loose

I have to rise and fight

even if it goes till eternity

Shocken Cult

It apparently appears that we never were in the Soc n Cult GC race.

Lit: Huh!! Finally, we have something to cheer about. With a couple of events left, we have registered our opening lit points, but on a high note. It’s a Gold in inter halls WTGW, for the third time in a row. Hats off to captain Rushin. Let us hope that this legacy continues.

Drams: The play ‘Johnny and Urvashi’ just missed out on the bronze in inter hall English drams, and ended up fourth. Amit Mantri played the lead character ‘Johnny’ and was directed by none other than ‘Nangto da’. Swarnavo bagged the best director prize for Bengali drams.

Ent: The inter hall western instrumentals didn’t fetch us any points either. However we have western groups coming up.

Fine arts & Modeling: Even our first fine arts and modeling points were registered this semester with painting and postering. We won a silver in painting, with Subhojit Chakladhar being awarded the best painter. Postering team also put up a nice performance but unfortunately couldn’t win any prizes.

Sports Saga

Sports has always been a forte of RP hall. With only aquatics, water-polo and athletics in last sem, a lot has happened till now. But the opening events this sem haven’t added to the sports GC chart.

Cricket: Though we qualified for the second round in the inter halls we didn’t fare well in the second round.

Hockey: We ended up fourth in the inter hall hockey tournament. In the semis against Azad, the game remained undecided till the end of stipulated time. But the penalty shoot out (4-2) ruled us out of the finals.

Techies Ruled

Currently we are leading the tech GC by 72.5 pts. At the start of this sem we were 2nd with a lag of 2.5 pts. A Gold in Chem Innovation, changed the scene. The chem. innovation team worked continuously for 24hrs, the total time allotted, for this gold.



Festive Season

Spring Fest 07 added another pleasant chapter in the history of Gymkhana. Taal, Pal, Kavi Sammelan, Anubhav were some of the star studded attractions for the junta. Shibani Kashyap and Band of Boys set the mood for the fest on the inaugural day. This was later carried on successfully by Shaan. Though there were some people not content with the Taal show, the starnite by Shaan was unanimously an enjoyable one. Kavi Sammelan was a huge success. Netaji was more than completely filled just before the start of the show. The audience had a wonderful panel of ‘hasya kavis’ entertaining them continuously. We even had a wonderful Indian classical ‘raga’ evening by Amaan and Ayaan Ali, famous Sarod players.

Kshitij ’07 had something more in store to offer compared to what it had for past couple of years. It changed the whole perception of ‘junta’ about Ktj. If numbers be a yardstick, Ktj was a huge success. Kgp was flooded with participants from different colleges. Shows like Sand Animation, Juggling Show, Guest lecture from Mr. Rakesh Sharma, Dr. K. Kasturirangan , Alyque Padamsee and Kevin Warwick attracted large crowds. The pyrotechnique show had almost all Kgpians surrounding the TSC but a slight drizzle before the show prevented it from living up to junta’s expectation. There was a constant buzz for three days in the Robotix arena.

Well the the fests have ended and so has our mid semester exams.
We do have lots of inter hall events, coming up this month in all the three cateogaries soc n cult, sports and tech. Together with this we will also be celebrating our hall day. So guys don’t fail to cheer up your hall team and assist them give our opponents a torment of the lifetime. Wishing all the boarders a very best of luck and a fun filled semester ahead.

Epitome lost!

“Dreams were fine,
Thinking of the manna he had dined;
The alarm bell rang,
No less Juggernaut’ than the snake’s fang;
Soon realizing the examination crank,
His mother fetched a glass of water that he drank;”

What a sad start to a gala day. For Art it was a night oops! A morning mare! Examination for him is:
“Horrendous! As it is,
Body buckles up as peas!
Without all the joys elate,
The worst thing he can designate;
Everything may be fine and the day may be dear,
But! Heart scarce stops panting with boding fear!
Mind brimming with baleful thought!
The worst fight that he has ever fought.
What is life without any care,
Examination! The worst nightmare!
Though being extremely intelligent, smart and prosaic, this was the only thing he hated.
He reached the hall and not the hall of fame, for he was the only one to be blamed!
As usual, he forgot everything, though knowing, forgot to bring!
The question papers being given, as if being relentlessly driven.
His mind flew to great height, but his entire body had crept behind.
Being a boy he couldn’t cry, but his eyes weren’t dry!
He closed his answer sheet and discovered that thin sheet of paper in his shoes.
Enough! Even if he detains, he will never peep at it as it pains!
He thought of Newton and Einstein for he was nothing less. His mind drove to his glorious past. Memories came flooding, swept the present and archaiced the future. Those medals, those hands on the heads, he remembered it all. He told to himself,
“Why can’t I do it?
Am I not that much fit!
I have all that takes,
I am the best cake the baker bakes.”
He remembered those sweet words from that sweet teacher. Boosted back, he promised to himself:
“As soon as the strife seizes,
I’ll finish all the portions into pieces;
I’ll do what no one has ever done,
Enough to force my father to say-‘I am a proud father of my son!’

I will not repeat the class as I’ll get a promotion,
And will give all my notes as donation!”
Just after a few moments:
“You are disqualified!”
The examiner said,
“You cheater, you rat in the lane,
Don’t you have any feelings you insane!
You monster! Get out!
Repeat the same class, any doubt?”

“So guys are still in soup?
Is it he, or the examinee, who created the loop?”

Final Year fareswell

ITC, HLL, Lehman Brothers, Shell Schlumberger, Adobe, Barclays Capital, Fair Isaac, Morgan Stanley and the list goes on…with large number of companies coming to KGP this time for recruitment and many more to come, the placements have been a delight. The pay packages have also been better compared to last year. Heartiest congratulations to all the seniors placed, and best of luck to all who are yet to be placed.

CAT-ching Stream

The CAT results are out and RPians have come out with flying colours. Parimal,Nitin,Sahan, Karan and Arvind all scored greater than 99 percentile. The pattern of the paper was modified with five choices in MCQs. The English portion was quite difficult and DI being the easiest among the three. Examinees who attempted English first were not satisfied after the paper. The change in pattern also added to the complexity of paper.



Need for Speed

Together with the beginning of this New Year begins yet another spring semester, which may well be a last one for many of our colleagues. This semester will also witness the fate of all GCs, which matters more than CG to many of us.
Along with this ‘big fight‘ going on we may well find ourselves dancing on the Perpz floor or deeply engrossed in Nirmaan or well be attending guest lecture of a Noble Laureate in the Spring Fest ‘07 and Kshitij ‘07 respectively.
A glance at the GC standings will show that our status is quite concerning. With hardly anything going our way in Soc n Cult events last semester, we stand last in the GC chart. Even in sports we share a common 4th place with LLR, but there is much to happen this semester in sports and games. Inter halls cricket will be starting next week. In Tech GC, we stand 2nd with only 2.5 pts from the 1st, which is just a matter of one event. YO RP!!!!



Snippets

1. Gold!! It’s a gold in ‘Illu’ after two unfortunate years. The hard work put in by the boarders has finally yielded results. The grounds of RP resounded with the ‘Illu kiski-‘ slogan. The gold was celebrated by organizing Miss RP (again after two years) and the obvious winner was Yash Chhabra. The wait for the grand ‘Illu’ treat was finally over with a super special in our mess.

2. However, our performance in the GC has not been up to the mark. We failed to score a single point in any of the literary events held so far. The silver lining is that we have a strong team for the remaining literary events. In Entertainment, we’ve had a bronze in eastern instrumentals. Raghu was awarded with second best individual performance. In the inter hall Dumb C, we won a bronze (last year it was a silver). We did not perform well in the fine arts events either. In Open IIT painting, Rahul Munshi secured 3rd position.
There’s a painting workshop organized by Gymkhana, the date of
which is yet to be finalized. It’s open for all.

3. In the Inter halls athletics meet we had three gold, in 1500m in 800m and 5k ,and all by Prashant Rajora. Yo Rajora!!. We also had two bronze in 110m and 400m hurdles by Jorawar and Siva respectively and a previous silver in inter hall 6.6km race. Despite all the hard work put in by the team members we ended up in 5th position. In the Open IIT hockey tournament we finished off in the second position.

4. In Tech Quiz we slipped to 2nd position from last year’s 1st. In Product Design, we again got silver and the results of Chem Innovation is yet to be announced.
